Some dogs lose their minds when they see their favorite toy. 🤪They start jumping, pulling on their human’s clothes, barking – anything to get that toy! And as fun as it is, this behavior tends to bring dog parents much discomfort.
⠀
❓So, how to train your dog to control their emotions when they see their most favorite toys?
⠀
Teach your dog one rule: 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐲, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦. Behave – and you will get what you want.
Your pet can sit, stand with all 4 paws pressed to the floor or offer you any other behavior of impulse-control. And as soon as this happens, give him/her the toy.
⠀
Let your dog play a little, then exchange the toy for a treat and repeat the exercise.
⠀
Slowly, you can increase the time of impulse-control intervals, as well as make the situation more difficult: wave the toy around, drop it, run away with it and so on.
But remember: complicate the task very slowly! Go one step at a time in order to not provoke your furry companion to make mistakes.
⠀
Also, don’t forget that such exercises are not at all simple for easily excitable dogs. Make sure you take your dog’s individual qualities and temper in consideration when you are planning a training session. That said, it is especially important for easily excitable dogs to know how to exercise impulse-control!
⠀
It’s a crucial skill for all dogs in general. Both puppies and adult dogs should be taught self-control. 🐶
